We have lost a friend, colleague and Knoxville office partner, Steven F. Owens, 37, who passed away on Feb. 2.&nbsp; He fought valiantly against cancer for almost two years.&nbsp; Steven was a valued member of the Merchant &amp; Gould team, and he will be missed by his colleagues and clients.&nbsp;

Steven is survived by his wife, Colby, and his two children, Sim (3 years) and Coralee (18 months), as well as many other family members and loved ones.&nbsp; Colby and the children are surrounded by family members and friends, as they navigate these difficult times.&nbsp; He was a loving husband and father, and, as we all know, a great attorney.&nbsp;

Steven practiced law for 11 years and joined our Merchant &amp; Gould team eight years ago.&nbsp; He was an extremely bright electrical engineer and lawyer, and his ability to handle very complex legal and technical problems for our clients was inspiring to all who had the pleasure of working with him.&nbsp; Perhaps more importantly, Steven was a soft-spoken gentleman who improved the lives of everyone around him by simply being a good friend.

Just last month on Jan. 1, Steven was promoted to partner.&nbsp; In typical “Steven fashion,” he took this new position very seriously and immediately began seeking increased responsibilities as both a working attorney and as a supervisory attorney for anyone who could benefit from his skills and talents.

Steven’s practice focused on patent prosecution and management.&nbsp;He had extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications in many industries, including aircraft instrumentation, amusement park rides, animal training devices, computer architecture, digital control systems, exercise equipment, medical devices, nuclear industry instrumentation, pet products, robotics, software and telecommunications. His patent prosecution practice encompassed both U.S. and foreign patent prosecution.&nbsp;

Steven received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and he received his J.D. degree from the Cumberland School of Law at&nbsp;Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.&nbsp; He was admitted to practice law in both Texas and Tennessee.

Steven was brave and strong throughout his fight with sarcoma, inspiring his family, friends, co-workers and the entire community with his courage and determination.&nbsp; We are keeping his family in our thoughts.&nbsp;
